Our nation’s capital, Washington, DC, is home to beautiful monuments and, of course, the White House. But for the many students who flock to DC, the tourist hotspots won’t keep them entertained (or fed!) for the whole school year! Recently, DC was named one of the most popular cities for people in their 20s. With a plethora of museums, sites to see, variety of nightlife, and activities, Washington, DC, is making a new name for itself. Being in my 20s myself, I am constantly exploring and finding new adventures around the city. But I always had a tough time finding guides or handbooks filled with great activities, trendy bars, and entertainment for new residents or college student in the area. That’s why I put together my own go-to guide of where students should start in a city that offers it all!

  1. Monuments: From the Washington monument to the Lincoln Memorial’s beautiful waterfront view, students can see all the big, beautiful marble memorials and get a workout by capitalizing on DC’s city bikes, located on almost every city block. You can tour the capitals monuments in a day!
  2. Work it out: With a chaotic work/school schedule it’s hard to commit to a gym membership without consistency. No need to worry! There are plenty of places throughout DC where you can pay by day. A popular craze lately has been hot yoga. Numerous of yoga/pilates studios offer student and daily rates, making it easy for you to exercise on your on schedule.
  3. Brunch: With crazy workweeks, Saturday brunch has become popular weekend break among the residents of DC. A lot of places offer great brunch specials. A favorite is Mad Hatter, located in DuPont Circle, with bottomless mimosas, a unique delicious menu, and an omelet bar all at a reasonable place makes for the perfect location. There are many restaurants in the surrounding area similar to Mad Hatter that offers great deals as well.
  4. Nightlife: From Georgetown’s waterfront to its trendy downtown bars, Washington, DC, has a great variety of places for everyone. If you’re looking for a casual night out, Adams Morgan is the place to start! If you’re looking for something more upscale, you can head to places like Shadow Room or Café Asia to enjoy cocktails and a dj.
  5. Sunday Funday: With the weekend slowly coming to an end, it’s important to take advantage of the gorgeous weather in DC. Grab a cappuccino at Eastern Market or go shopping on Union. Walk all the way from DuPont to downtown and stroll around the tidal basin. DC has more than enough to keep you entertained!

I discovered CollegeXpress while embarking on my college search journey as an excited—but scared and way confused—high schooler without a counselor or college-bound sibling to give me advice. Let me tell you, I’m so glad that I stumbled on this community! CollegeXpress helped me find potential colleges and keep application deadlines straight. It gave me a great list of scholarships, and the blogs and emails made me feel like I wasn’t going it alone. Almost three years later and with freshman year of college down, I still love the CollegeXpress vibe so much that I’m writing for them. I’d recommend this site to anyone!

$10,000 Scholarship Winner, 2021

I first discovered CollegeXpress during my sophomore year of high school while researching colleges that interested me. My SAT prep class the following year further familiarized me with the opportunities available through the organization. CX has personally helped me by exposing me to a diverse selection of schools as well as scholarships and life tips that have provided valuable guidance in my college search.

This scholarship will help me adjust to college life without worrying as much about tuition. This gives me more room to truly explore and benefit from all aspects of higher education. I plan to study Conservation Biology and work protecting species/ecosystems. I’m looking forward to getting field experience and seeing firsthand the problems research is solving.

High School Class of 2023

I’m currently a college freshman attending Towson University. My major is Information Technology, and I plan to minor in Electronic Media & Film to achieve my goal of becoming a production engineer. Upon graduating high school earlier this year, I was awarded a $5,000 scholarship from CollegeXpress, which greatly assisted in paying my tuition. Truthfully, this financial reward was the difference in affording my room and board and tuition, along with other expenses for school. My family and I haven’t stopped celebrating my award since it was bestowed on me. I will never forget this opportunity for allowing me to get my foot into my university financially.

High School Class of 2022

I wanted a school that wasn't too far away from home and could provide me with a full-ride scholarship. CollegeXpress helped me put into perspective the money I had to pay to attend those schools, which ultimately drove me to choose to attend a community college first to get used to being in college before transferring to the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, one of the colleges I was able to research further on CollegeXpress.

For the entire year before college, I spent a lot of time deeply considering what major I wanted to go into and how to fund my higher education. After a lot of research, I came across CollegeXpress, which helped me ultimately find a ton of scholarships for which I could apply—and some of which I received! If it weren’t for CollegeXpress, I may not have found those scholarships as they didn't appear on any other scholarship search forum. Additionally, I learned more about the options I had been considering for my major through CollegeXpress’s resources. In the end, I chose to major in Computer Science, as it seemed best suited to me and the careers in the field seemed enjoyable, and I've never been more excited to move into my future! Ultimately, I want to thank CollegeXpress for offering their services. I received enough financial aid in scholarships to fund my entire freshman year of college and even got some money refunded which I used to purchase a new laptop, and I bought all of the books I needed for the semester!
